The new CM of Tamil Nadu will Sasikala, AIADMK legislature party leader elected
DMK compares Sasikala's elevation to that of Rabri Devi in 1997. Manu Sundaram, DMK spokesperson reacted to the elevation of Sasikala, "I think this was along expected lines. However, Sasikala has spoken in public once, never contested office, and has the sword of disproportional assets case hangs over her. Things go against her. She is a 'benami' chief minister".
However, the clamour to see Sasikala as the chief minister grew in the coming days. The rumour mill began working overtime after three senior officers were given the marching orders on Friday. As TS Sudhir noted, one of them is Sheela Balakrishnan, who had been appointed as the adviser to the Tamil Nadu government by Jayalalithaa after she retired as chief secretary and practically ran the government when the late chief minister was hospitalised between September and December 2016.
Bikram Vohra opines, "Having never held anything more powerful than Jayalalitha’s coat tails, the question of political experience obviously does not enter the equation. It is enough that she was close to the deceased leader and that power by association is a potent force even if it defies logic".Read more.
Earlier, Panneerselvam and other ministers met Sasikala at the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa where Sasikala continues to live. The meeting of the legislators was called at short notice, a day after Sasikala appointed some former ministers and others who had been earlier shunted out by Jayalalithaa to various party posts.
Last month, senior AIADMK leader Thambidurai had urged Sasikala to take over as Chief Minister. Thambidurai, who is also deputy speaker of Lok Sabha, said that leadership in both the party and governance should be with the same person. The leader cited the political tussle in Uttar Pradesh’s Samajwadi Party and argued that control of government and party should vest with the same person.
AIADMK General Secretary Sasikala was formally made the party legislative party chief on Sunday, paving way for her to be sworn in as the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu, media reports suggested. News 18 also reported that the O Panneerselvam has resigned as the chief minister.

In her acceptance speech, Sasikala said that it was O. Panneerselvam who asked her to take the role of the Chief Minister. “It was Panneerselvam who had first persuaded me to become the Chief Minister and General Secretary as well when Jayalalithaa passed away. Whenever the party faced tough times and whenever there were difficulties in Amma becoming the Chief Minister, it was our dear brother Panneerselvam who has been loyal.” She also said that she will work for the people and will look to fulfill the dreams of Jayalalitha.
"As a responsible party, the DMK is watching the situation closely. Any decision that we take will be within the framework of democracy, reflecting the popular willand aspirations of the people," he said.
"One thing is certain that the government - in its present form - is clearly one that doesn't have the explicit legitimacy of having been elected by the people. The people voted for a government to be headed by Ms Jayalalithaa in May, 2016 and not for one to be run by Mr. O Panneerselvam or any other person from Ms Jayalalithaa's household," Stalin told PTI in an interview.
